I don't seem to be able to access any image servers, such as Google Maps Street Map, Bing Maps Street Map or event OpenStreet Maps base.

Checking the event log, I'm getting cannot get web resource on any of them.

Any idea what might be going on?

Thanks.

Dimitri

What version of Manifold are you using? Try downloading and running Viewer. Do those work?

I'm running build 9.0.182.1

Same problem with Viewer

That's way too much information. :-) I think we can do better helping you if you tell us the specifics of exactly what you are doing and exactly what happens. Basic infrastructure information, like whether you have Internet or not, would also help.

The Notes section of the Web Servers topic has helpful usage and debugging information. Tell us what you've done to investigate each of those points.

In Manifold 9, if I Create=>>New Data Source and select either Bing Street Maps or Google Maps Street Map or OpenStreet Maps Base and then, for example with Google Maps Street Map, expand it and open Google Maps Street Map Image it shows Selected: 0 of 23,456,248,059,221 but nothing resolves.

I'm not sure what else to tell you about the Favorites in New Data Source not working.

I'm wondering if this isn't related to a similar problem I started seeing about the same time where none of my external data sources will appear. At first, I just thought it was one of my counties no longer supporting the data, but have noticed it with all my external data sources.

Here's an example of one of the sources that's stopped working:

Works fine for me:

More data would help...

Well, you could begin by answering the questions I asked:

Basic infrastructure information, like whether you have Internet or not, would also help.

The Notes section of the Web Servers topic has helpful usage and debugging information. Tell us what you've done to investigate each of those points.

For example, do you have Internet working? Sometimes people have Internet access problems that they don't realize they're having. That's why the ever-helpful User Manual goes to the effort of explicitly discussing some non-obvious Internet problems under the heading "Must Have Internet" - what did you do to investigate if what it wrote applies to you?

To take another example, if you're working in an organization your IT department may not allow you access some sites. Or, it could be you've installed some sort of "protect me from myself" security suite that doesn't allow programs you're running to access Internet.

If your IT department has installed security software on your computer that prevents applications from accessing Internet, well, heck, that would explain problems like...

where none of my external data sources will appear.

... So check that. Keep in mind "Must Have Internet" is only one of the items listed in the user manual. There are others, and there could be multiple items in play. For example, there's the famous line:

Some "open" servers are only open until the server decides we have used it too much, after which it denies further access.

Could it be you been using Google a lot and they just decided to nuke you for being a freeloader?

Just saying, if you're having a problem that other people are not having that's sign it's something to do with what you're doing, and not likely an issue in the software. Carefully looking at all details, starting with what the User Manual suggests to check, is the way to find the problem and fix it.

My internet is working just fine and I've looked through the web servers topic and can't find any reason why Bing, Google and OpenStreet all fail. In addition, none of my previous data sources work any longer. All of them produce a Cannot get web resource error in the log.

For example, this link has always worked for me:

https://gis.sumtercountyfl.gov/sumtergis/rest/services/Public/Parks/MapServer/3

But again, the Cannot get web resource error

Yes, it would appear that it's something on my end, but I'm stumped.

I think we need Manifold to build some vector tile server support.

I have suggested this before and it seems way overdue to me.

ESRI seems to have made the switch to vector tiles for their basemaps.

Why? Vector tiles are made by taking a perfectly coherent vector map and chopping it up into tiles. Why not just use the real thing without chopping it up?

ESRI seems to have made the switch to vector tiles for their basemaps.

That's because their products are not performant enough to handle the large data sizes encountered in modern vector basemaps, so they try to work around that with a Rube Goldberg hack. Manifold has no need for such hacks (which bring with them a raft of problems if you are interested in data and not pure visuals): it can handle the vector basemaps directly without any structural mutilation.

By the way, it's poor form to threadjack a thread somebody posted to get help. I apologize for contributing to that. If this is worth discussing in a way that has not been discussed previously, it's worth making a fresh post to start a thread for this topic.

My apologies Dimitri --

Clearly I did not read through the thread. My brain saw "image servers not working" and went to thinking "base-maps not working - the unsupported vector tile server problem again". My bad -- not enough sleep.

Re: Vector tile support and why not use the real thing rather than chopping it up? For me it's how our provincial government provides basemaps, chopped up into vector tiles. The government used to provide basemaps on wms servers but discontinued that.

Why vector tiles? The provincial basemaps show contours (at larger scales), place names, names of water ways, parks, etc. It's the common basemap. See attachment. To duplicate those elements, I need to add separate layers in M9 and manage visibility of place names and water ways depending on zoom level. The province sells contours vector layers by mapsheet area but are costly as I would need tens if not hundreds of individual mapsheets coverages for the areas I produce maps.

With M9, my basemap is Google maps satellite images. My maps don't have the details of maps of other contractors nor clients using QGIS. Using vector tiles is at the top of my M9 wish list and I have submitted a feature request.

Hi wvayens. It looks as if your problem remains unaddressed, or maybe you started a fresh new thread that I've missed....?

Its been a long time since I had this problem, but in my case, I tracked it down to a Windows permissions issue. It is common with zip files, as the default for Windows, at least in my Windows installation, is to block their execution. Try right clicking on the file name and then, in the resulting dialog box, the 'Unblock' checkbox (circled in red below).

Good luck!

Actually, about a week ago, they all started miraculously working again...no idea why it stopped or why it started again
