Hello All, have just upgraded to 8.0.35.0 and wanting to geocode some street addresses in Canada. I understand that the Geocoding Extension is now built into this version. I no longer see any options for activating Extensions. I have copied the geocoding server dlls into C:\Program Files\Manifold System. A csv table of addresses is imported. But the Geocoding Option reports "No geocoding data sources." I've read the manual up and down but am stuck, not sure what is missing. Any thoughts are appreciated, thanks . . . .

PS/ I've searched the threads but see no directly relayed info.

Dimitri

Activating 8.0.35.0 automatically upgrades your license to Ultimate x64. All extensions are built in and turned on with no need to activate extensions. See the Install and Activate topic.

You won't have any geocoding data sources if you don't install them. See the Geocoding Data Sources topic.

Okay, thanks Dimitri. I've gone through the data source topic and thought I had completed the necessary steps but I will look at it again.

It looks like I might require the geocoding database but the link to it seems to be not working. Since my interest is Canada, it probably wouldn't be much use anyway. Can you suggest another one that would at least confirm that my system is functional? I'll try to find a download for MapPoint as it may be more applicable here.

I installed some geocoding servers, perhaps they are not the same as a geocoding data source? I'm not clear on some of the terminology.

Thanks for your suggestions…

Dimitri

A geocoding server in Release 8 is a geocoding data source (fourth bullet, third paragraph in the Geocoding Data Sources topic... not trying to be a wise guy, just pointing that out so you can follow the links in that bullet). The geocoding database would not help you in Canada as it is from US TIGER files, for the US only (also, grossly obsolete).

If you installed some geocoding servers in 8, where did you get them, exactly how did you install them, and which ones did you try to use, exactly how did you try to use them, and what happens when you try to use them?

I don't use Release 8 for geocoding but only 9. However there are basic things for downloads, like unblocking them, that apply.

Right, thanks. I think I've followed those steps but will confirm and get back to you. Thanks for clarifying the server/data source terminology.

On-line sources don't work in 8 any longer. You'll need to create a local file-based data source and point to it in Tools / Options / File Locations. Here in Oz we can download the national address file GNAF for free. Takes some fiddling but saved as a suitably formatted table in a M8 file and referenced as above, it works, though takes a while to cache before it can be used practically.

OK, thanks for that update. I'll investigate Plan B . . . . .
