Good afternoon, I am trying to connect a WMS Server, in V8 please. I see the notes below from Dimitri that are great - just hoping there may be something similar for V8 please?

This is the path I am hoping to link to.

https://services.slip.wa.gov.au/public/services/SLIP_Public_Services/Locate/MapServer/WMSServer?SERVICE=WMS&REQUEST=GetCapabilities&VERSION=1.3.0

Many thanks in advance

Kind regards

From Dimitri 16 Mar 2023

Here's a topic that's a good start: Web Servers. There are other topics with specific examples of using WMS servers, like Example: Connect to a WMS Server for National Map Layers

I have found some notes, but not sure I am doing it correctly..

Internet Map Server - To create a linked image from an OGC WMS Server: ....

https://manifold.net/doc/mfd8/whgdata/whlstt61.htm#61

I have pasted in the path and refreshed, but get Unable to connect to Server.

https://services.slip.wa.gov.au/public/services/SLIP_Public_Services/Locate/MapServer/WMSServer

Any help would be very much appreciated. Many thanks and kind regards

The path works in V9, not sure why it doesn't work in V8.

Will have a further look.

hello Louise,

in M8 you can connect to the server this way:

file - link image - select OGC WMS servers ()

choose in Servers

https://services.slip.wa.gov.au/public/services/SLIP_Public_Services/Locate/MapServer/WMSServer?SERVICE=WMS&REQUEST=GetCapabilities&VERSION=1.3.0

If you want you can increase the size of the pixels to e.g. 100000

click the refresh button. Done

Many thanks for assistance here.

I tried to connect as indicated here and get issues - see attached image WMS Servier connection issue.

I also tried to open up your attached. I see there is a layer there, but when I try to open I get similar error - see second image- -WA sip error.jpg please.

Any assistance here would be much appreciated.

This might be related to TLS 1.2 not being enabled on the system.

See this:

Thanks Adam. I checked and in my Windows, only "Use TLS 1.2" is checked. 1.0, 1.1 and 1.3 experimental are unchecked

The server works on our test system.

Are you using a proxy server? If so, don't specify it as 'xxx.xxx.xxx', use 'http://xxx.xxx.xxx'.

Hi Louise. Do you have Manifold 9? To use as a test? If not, there is the free Viewer version of M9.

M9 Viewer download link, to the left of the highlighted text using this link.

https://manifold.net/updates/download_viewer.shtml#:~:text=Edge%20builds%20are%20the%20same

In M9 or M9 viewer: File > Create New Data Source > More. This brings up the New Data Source dialog box. Paste your URL into Source, click Create Data source. Second screenshot below shows the result. If the URL works in M9 or M9 Viewer for you, that eliminates your Windows settings, your connection or the wms server as the issue.

OK. I have downloaded V9 and yes I am able to get the connection to work - I too have now connected and can see image same as your Resulting Image jpg. So I guess you are indicating that the problem is not my windows, connection or the wms. Great, Many thanks here.

Hi Louise, perhaps next step is to test a known-to-be-good .wms server. Searching, I found this Australian site, https://services.ga.gov.au/ The 17th tile "Australia á__ Seas and Submerged Lands Act 1973" has a .wms URL

Right clicking and copy URL yields:

https://services.ga.gov.au/gis/services/SSLA_1973_AMB2014a/MapServer/WMSServer?request=GetCapabilities&service=WMS

In M8: File > Link > Image > File of type OGC MWS Data. Paste in URL into Server then click doubleheaded refresh arrow should yield the layers list in the screen shot and the map.

This should confirm that your M8 can connect to a known-good .wms server and you have no issues with Windows or your firewall.

Hi Louise. I'm also using Windows 10.

Is your computer mobile? I.E. It's a laptop vs a desktop? Can you connect to the Internet in a cafe or somewhere else? is your computer a personal one or one issued by your employer? If company/institution issued, it may have some restrictions.

The fact that you can't connect to a known-good .wms server suggests it's a firewall, network or Windows issue.

What version is your M8? Since using M9 I haven't been diligent updating my M8. Mine is v. 8.0.30.0.

Are you able to connect to any other .wms servers?

Someone else knowledgeable about networks might be able to shed light on your error messages "Service Point Manager does not support proxies with the https scheme"

A process of elimination.

Louise James40 post(s)
#18-May-23 06:04

Many thanks Tony,

It is a laptop, personnel one, no set company rules.👍

Manifold Build 8.0.30.0

I have never been successful in connecting to a wms from Manifold. Generally, just use the Manifold Image Server links - they have been great.

Interesting but I can connect in V9, and it is working fine.

Thanks for your thoughts here. Yes anyone else has any thoughts re the message would be appreciated

Try upgrading to 8.0.35. This will quite likely fix the issue because we did have adjustments specifically around client-side setup for the HTTPS handshake (insisted on using the modern versions of TLS, etc).

Be careful during the upgrade though. Your current build has both 32-bit and 64-bit modes. 8.0.35, like all newer builds of Manifold only has 64-bit. If you are using 32-bit mode (if your use of Manifold consists of launching the application, just check the About box to see which mode you are running), do not upgrade just yet and consider what you can do to stop depending on 32-bit mode first.

Louise James40 post(s)
#19-May-23 01:59

Thanks Adam. OK. I am running 64bit, so should be OK. I am sure I am not the only one who puts off running updates...

I will give it a go.

Just a side, I just ticked on Help - Check for updates and got an error - Error checking for updates.

Perhaps my system needs some repairing. Would you have a link to an update method I would use please. Many thanks Adam and the forum

Louise James40 post(s)
#19-May-23 02:46

OK. I have installed V 8.0.35.

I have retried to link to WMS Server previous and see this message:

Cant initialize OGC WMS connection services. (see image also) Likely different issue now.

I have copied in the contents of Manifold Image Servers.zip and Geocoding Servers Pack.zip into the Manifold folder (see image of folder containing files). I am just running manifold direct from this exe.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks folks

OGC services are bundled into the main install, they should work without any additional ZIPs.

How did you install 8.0.35? There are two types of installs - a regular EXE which puts Manifold into Program Files and registers various modules, and a portable ZIP which does not register any modules and relies on the registration to be provided by a prior regular install (Manifold 8 requires having a regular install on the system). You should have installed the EXE. Because you want the registered OGC module to be a new one. (It could be that you installed the ZIP and so the OGC module that is *registered* is the one from 8.0.30, which is why 8.0.35 cannot initialize it, it needs a newer module.)

Louise James40 post(s)

Yes, you are right onto it. I did do the Edge download initially and Servers didn't work.

I have now downloaded the Base version and installed and I am back up and running.

However, I am back to the original issues now... No joy with connecting to

https://services.ga.gov.au/gis/services/SSLA_1973_AMB2014a/MapServer/WMSServer?request=GetCapabilities&service=WMS

I get this message:

"Service Point Manager does not support proxies with the https scheme" Cant connect to Server

Many thanks' folks for all of your ideas to assist me here - very much appreciated.

Are you sure you installed 8.0.35? Can you post the screen of the Help - About dialog? The server you mention works on our test system as is, from a clean install.

Thanks. It seems you are running 8.0.35, indeed.

Since you say you aren't specifying any proxies in Manifold 8 manually (check Tools - Options, Proxy Server, the 'Connect via proxy server' checkbox should be turned off, report whether it is turned on or off), there must be one set up system-wide. Could you check (a) the values of the HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY environment variables (launch a command-line prompt, then run 'echo %HTTP_PROXY%' and 'echo %HTTPS_PROXY%', observe the output - or run 'set' and locate HTTP_PROXY / HTTPS_PROXY in the list of environment variables, post the output of either method), and (b) proxy settings in Internet Options (see the screen on how to reach them, post your screen of the final 'Local Area Network (LAN) Settings' dialog).

Click on the image above to expand it to full size. The description: launch Explorer, navigate to Control Panel, type 'internet' in the search box on the right, click Internet Options on the left, click the Connections tab, click the LAN settings button, done, we are now in the proxy settings (post them).

Awesome. I am up and running - it is now working - Wonderful.

There was a proxy set in the Manifold, Tool Options setting area. Connect via proxy server was set to On. Apologies there - I hadn't been in to check that area. I have now removed the proxy setting and it is working!! See attached screen snaps.

Many many thanks Adam and the forum for helping me sort the issue here. Very much appreciated.

Hi Louise,

Try opening this .map file. It has a layer using the .wms URL that works for me. Manifold map file created in 8.0.30.0 attached. Screen shot shows, hopefully, what should appear.

.wms URL https://services.ga.gov.au/gis/services/SSLA_1973_AMB2014a/MapServer/WMSServer?request=GetCapabilities&service=WMS

What version of Windows 10 are you using? I'm on Windows 10 Professional.

Hi Louise

This is a good sign. Seems you are connecting to the .wms server as the layer is in M8 now. Just not displaying. I annotated your screen shot.

What happens when you try with the .wms server you were initially trying?

Hi Tony -

In this screen snap I was opening your map file that showed the layer "Services.g..." layer, but still not connecting. I think the only reason it showed it there was because you had been able to connect to it and saved to the map file. I am still having "Cant connect to Server" issues when I try from scratch.

Thanks for looking at my issue here - really appreciate the thoughts and ideas.
