To be more precise, since images can now hold any type of value, up to four channels or bands, each up to float64 type: 9-series products don't care what meaning an image contains, be it RGB, RGBa, RGB + IR, remote sensing bands, landcover classification (up to four schemes at once), elevation(s), up to 3 data channels plus a date code, a source identifier, or a confidence level, or something else. "Z" is a possible characterization of one possible element. When the status bar readout comes along, no doubt it will show the full set of values under the mouse cursor (for the active layer, if viewing a map), in channel order, but without naming the values since their interpretation is strictly up to the observer.
